Travel thousands of years into the past with the Archaeological Tour in San Pedro de Atacama and discover the origins of the Atacameño Culture through some of the most significant historical sites in the Atacama Desert.

This experience combines archaeology, history and the singular landscapes of the Chilean altiplano, offering a chance to learn how the ancient Atacameño communities that inhabited the Salar de Atacama lived long before the arrival of the Spanish.

The route includes a visit to the Tulor Village, one of the oldest human settlements in the Salar de Atacama basin. Preserved for centuries beneath the desert sand, this ancient village helps us understand the social organisation, architecture and daily life of the first Atacameño inhabitants.

The excursion continues towards the Pucará de Quitor, a historic indigenous fortress built during times of conflict between Atacameño communities and later used during the resistance against the Spanish conquest. The site includes a museum with archaeological pieces and explanations about local history and culture.

The tour also involves a walk up to the Quitor Lookout, where you can take in a panoramic view of the valley, the fortress and the desert landscapes surrounding San Pedro de Atacama. The trek involves approximately 1 hour of ascent and 30 minutes of descent.

Ideal for travellers interested in archaeology, Atacameño culture, pre-Columbian history and the landscapes of the Atacama Desert.

The excursion runs in small groups of up to 12 passengers, to offer a more comfortable, close and personalised experience.

Duration: approximately 4 hours.
