Guide
Discover one of the most iconic landscapes in northern Chile with the Valle de la Luna Tour in San Pedro de Atacama. Set in the heart of the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range), this striking natural setting surprises visitors with rock formations, dunes, salt caverns and landscapes shaped by millions of years of erosion, creating an environment that recalls the surface of the moon.
During the excursion you'll travel through some of the valley's most representative sectors, such as the Duna Mayor, the Anfiteatro and different panoramic viewpoints where the desert changes colour with the light of dusk. The reddish, golden and orange tones make this one of the most photographed experiences in Atacama.
Thanks to the extreme aridity and the unique geological conditions of the Atacama Desert, Valle de la Luna offers landscapes considered among the most surprising on the planet, and it is one of the highlights for anyone visiting San Pedro de Atacama.
Ideal for travellers looking for unforgettable landscapes, photography, nature and a first approach to the Atacama Desert.
Important note – Closure of the Mirador de Ckari
The Mirador de Ckari will remain closed until further notice, possibly until the end of 2026, for safety reasons related to the earthquake that affected the area this year and to the widening works on the Bioceanic Route.
For this reason, the sunset of the Valle de la Luna Tour does not currently take place at that viewpoint. During the route the guide will select a safe and authorised spot to watch the sunset, taking into account the conditions of the day and respecting the access restrictions to the land belonging to the local indigenous communities.
The tour continues to operate normally, although the route and the sunset viewing spot may vary for these reasons.
Duration: approximately 4 hours
Itinerary
16:00 summer / 14:30 winter - Departure to Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley)
from the meeting point in downtown San Pedro

First stop: Duna Mayor (Great Dune)
A landmark of the Moon Valley, the Duna Mayor offers unmatched views of the Salt Mountain Range. Its wind-sculpted sands and privileged location invite you to marvel at the desert’s beauty, especially at sunset, when warm colors transform the landscape into a unique natural spectacle.

The Amphitheater
The Amphitheater is an impressive natural formation of rock and salt, standing 40 meters tall and curving like a natural stage in the Moon Valley. Its irregular texture and unique glow under the sunlight make it a highlight of the landscape. As part of Los Flamencos National Reserve and declared a Natural Sanctuary in 1982, the Amphitheater is an unforgettable

Las Tres Marías
In the Valley of the Moon, you’ll find The Three Marys, rock formations sculpted over millions of years by desert wind and salt erosion. Also known as “The Watchers,” they are primarily made of granite, quartz, and clay. The tour includes a walk through the canyon and Amphitheater and ends at the LickanAntai viewpoint, where you can enjoy a stunning

Ckari viewpoint at sunset (currently closed; the stop is made at an alternative spot)
We'll walk along the marked trails to take in the scale of this place. At sunset, the valley lights up with a vibrant palette of colors. As the sun drops toward the horizon, the sky fills with warm, golden tones, and the different features of the landscape take on shades and shadows that create a striking visual display.
